    Re: Gas Bill Survey

Same as fw last page, I have a combi condensing boiler fitted with only 7 rads on most of the time, and my last quarter gas bill was only £120 that also includes cooker and gas fire.

    Re: Gas Bill Survey

Hi Andy, I am having the same problem as you appear to be, my gas bill for jan -March is £245.00, 3 bed semi, only me here, and Im never in, and I only have a main seven and a hob!! No central heating or gas fire, cooker electric.... They wont check the meter, or if they do they want to charge me £60! My problems started when I had a new meter fitted, and someone at BG said I may still be being charged at the old rate on a new meter, which would more than double the bill.Still waiting for them to investigate, even after doing the seven day reading, which didnt actually tell them anything!!! Have you had a new meter fitted? Dont know about the national average, but my friend has a 4 bed house, central heating, gas fire etc and his was £223 for the same months!!!

I know this probably hasnt helped, but it was good to moan Ha!Ha!

    K

We've just got our gas bill and it was £418.77 for the last quarter. We don't even have a gas cooker. I was also horriried and couldn't understand it. Also have 4-bed house. Hardly ever use oven! Ready to pull hair out and move to a 1-bed flat!

    Re: Gas Bill Survey

i have a similar problem 54002kwh used in 12 months and a £1155 bill to go with it!!  I nevr had this problem last year when i was with bg only in the last 12 months when being with atlantic, we have a meter that is 2 years old ish and looking at it it has 5 dials then 3 more and is measured in m cubed so why on my bill is it worked out using an imperial to metric conversion factor, surley it is already metric? could this be the problem , i live in a 3 bed semi combi boiler 2 years old just heating on 2 hrs a day at the mo plus hob and water for say 2 baths a day and were using 3 units a dy , units are probably right my mum uses 1 unit in a 3 bed bungalow heating on similar but no baths . of course atlantic are completly useless and wont help me but something has to be wrong because it wasnt that high last year and we dont use it any more than we did before.

    Re: Gas Bill Survey

Ofgem have said that the 'average' customer uses 20500kWh of gas per year (3300kWh ele ona 1 rate).
How this converts to units depends on the meter and the quality of the gas in the pipes, but if you have an older (grey or brown) meter you would be lokoing at 1-2 units/day. A newer (white) meter is around 5 units a day.

    Remember this is the average.
You will use more in colder months than in warmer ones. You may find you usemore at weekends than in the week.

Half of all people will use more than this, and half less.

Best answer is to speak to someone about energy efficiency - start with BG

I don't follow this. Isn't gas the same quality? How does the colour of the meter affect the average Kwh consumed?

    Re: Gas Bill Survey

    Hi Andy,

My partner and I moved into a house last june, by september npower tried to send me a bill for just over 900 quid after a lot of moaning from them we ended up having to take them to court and received the full 900 quid back and also 1500 pound compensation, you wanty to threaten them with court, they'll soon sort it out plus you could be a couple of grand richer, do it see what happens.

    Re: Gas Bill Survey

The gas we get has gone through miles of pipes and has come from different places.
While the quality of the gas is roughly the same (with a few small exceptions), ofgem lieks everything to be precise.

Look on the back of your gas bill and you'll see some calculations. One of these (usualy a number somewhere near 40) refers to the quality of the gas (think energy per cubic metre). The quality of the gas is measured everyday at differnt points round the country and the figures given to the suppliers.
If you have higher quality gas you need less to heat your home (more energy per cubic metre), and your meter measures the volume of gas you use, so this is used to even things out.

Older meters measured gas in hundreds of cubic feet. These are called imperial and were mainly dark grey and had 4 main numbers in the reading.
The Europe cam along and decided that we must measure in metric, so we have newer metric meters which are mainly white and have 5 main numbers in the reading. They measure in cubic metres which are smaller than 100 cubic feet so they need more numebrs.

So the unit on a white (metric) meter is smaller that a unit on a grey (imperial) meter, even if the same volume of gas is used.

To get your bill suppliers convert to kWh before calculating charges so you are no worse off on either meter.

    Re: Gas Bill Survey

    hi lise,

This sounds a really fantastic outcome.Could you expand on it some more please.

What was your actual consumption during June to Sept in pounds? How did they manage to clock up £900 against you.On what basis did you receive £1500 compensation? You mention court action but they presumably settled prior to those proceedings?

I won £250 from them after an extraordinary long battle but £1500 is a hell of a result.Well done !!

    Re: Gas Bill Survey

    Thanks Jon,

I did know about the metering types but got confused thinking that you were saying that affected KWh,which you have now clarified. What I didn't realise was the 'calorific Value' differred by period.Mine is approaching 40 but varies bill by bill.

You learn something new every day.

    Re: Gas Bill Survey

Incredibly, I live in a similar house (4 bed bungalow, gas central heating and hob, 2 adults, one child) and am paying even more than you! I am using approximately 25 units a day. I'm having the meter checked next week, there must be something wrong.
