I have a question about speed
I have been with Orange for a year..so far so good..I guess I've been lucky never needed tech support..lol..I've heard it's bad.
I was on 2mb broadband £17.99 a month, I noticed they offered a faster speed for the same price..just meant another years contract, so I thought..not going nowhere why not...they said it would take ten days to complete..it took three..now I'm getting 7.6mb broadband...but am I ? My son who lives a mile away had a bit of a fall out with orange two weeks ago and has since dumped them and went to Bt...when he talked to Bt on the phone they said that because of the area we live in the most they could offer him speed wise was 3mb..( funny I thought were on the same exchange ) yet I'm getting a mighty 7.6....so I went to Bt.com and used the speed checker...this will tell me that orange is pulling a fast one I thought..typed in my number...pressed the button and...the most you can get on your line is....7mb...So I typed in my sons number....pressed the button.....the most he can get is....8mb
Confused..so am I...Must say I don't notice a great deal of difference..between 2 and 7 depends really on the site your downloading from among other factors..so is orange telling the truth... or is Bt telling the truth...maybe they are on the phone but not on their website..maybe to make you think you will get a faster connection than you actually can..when you sign up to them...But how can you actually prove it..?
Thanks for your time..

Re: I have a question about speed
If you login to your router or use your modem's software (if using USB) it will tell you what speed you are connected at.
If you want to test your download speed I suggest you try downloading something from the UK mirror service which is run by Lancaster University. The download speeds you get from there are always high.
http://www.mirror.ac.uk
You can try downloading this file to check the speed you can get downloading.
http://www.mirror.ac.uk/mirror/sunsite.uio.no/ftp/linux/MandrivaLinux/official/iso/8.1/ia64/MandrakeLinux-8.1-CD1.ia64.iso
It comes down on my PC at 2300kb/s which is equiv to about a 20mb connection. If you are supposed to be getting 7mb you should be able to download the file at 800-900kb/s.
Let me know how you get on.

Re: I have a question about speed
Hi, Thanks for the info...
I did as you suggested and tried the download...nothing like the speed you estimated...around 150 - 200 kbs .
I also did some online checking, I found various websites that offer this, and although most of them came up with a different answer, on average it works out about a 3mb download speed, which means the guy on the phone from Bt was telling the truth, so all, if you use the Bt online checker beware lol..it's a wee bit out.
Thanks for taking the time to help out.
Regards.

Re: I have a question about speed
150 - 200 kbs is about 3.2mb so I guess thats accurate.
Still somewhat slow considering.

Re: I have a question about speed
Interesting. I live 2 mins walk from an exchange so I can get the top speeds also broadband sites confirms this. I should be getting 8MP. Just done a speed test and I got 3MP. I'm with Orange.
