    Nationwide Personal Card Readers

Has anyone actually used their card reader yet ?

I have not even pullred the plastic strip out to allow the battery to connect

They originally claimed to be warning us when we were supposed to be using them - but this was 3 months ago and I haven't heard a thing since - their website doesn't say much on the subject either

I've not got mine yet but there's some info here.

It sounds like it's just a key generator so when you someone tries to transfer the contents of your account to a bank in Indonesia, they will need your debit card, your PIN and the code generated by the card reader. As I say, I've not got one yet so I'm not sure.

My parents had to use theirs to transfer money to their French bank account via Travelex.

I still haven't got mine yet, but can't think of any circumstance that I will need it!

So - they are being used then ?

I was told that Nationwide would inform me when they were to be used

Barclays introduced these some time ago - and they're a pain in the backside. We had received them about 6 or 8 weeks before they introduced them and then one day, the login screen told us to use the Pinsentry machine or call Customer services. Now there is no logging into the online banking without it.

Thing is, this means you have to carry the thing around with you all day if you want to be able to take advantage of the ease of online banking - which kind of defeats the object, I think...

It's to counter all the spoof emails and fake login pages that are around. I can imagine that it'll certainly be a nuisance for laptop users to carry around and another password for everyone (at Nationwide we already have 3 - the customer number, the memorable data and the passnumber - that must be entered on each login).

I agree with what you say about the reader but the set up has flaws. For example, I have two FlexAccounts, one with a debit card and one with a cash card. If, via the account which has the debit card, I want to pay any standing orders or transfer money to other Nationwide account holders, for each transaction I have to use the card reader. However, I can perform the same functions from the cash card account without the use of the reader. I have already complained to Nationwide about this and am awaiting their response. I have also complained that the reader should not have to be used for standing orders. I pay quite a few of my bills that way and each time I have to use this darn reader. The reader should be programmed for use only when transfering to individuals and making external payments (i.e. not Nationwide accounts).
