can you hire a car abroad without a credit card ? ie by paying in cash.

It prob depends on which country you go to, where are you going?

For spain, most of the companies will want a credit/debit card as a form of security toi satisfy the insurance. There are lots of scams in Spain that involve theives posing as rental attendants who park your car for the hire company. Instead they steal the car but if gave them the keys then you are liable.

The rental company will charge your credit card for the cost of replacing the car. Similar stories were on watchdog last week, you might even be able to catch it on BBC media player.

hi, becky, my query re. car hire paid for in cash. thanks to joe for advice. my only experience with car hire 3 years ago, on return of car i explained that Aeriel had been snapped off by vandals, i was told my "comprehensive" insurance did not cover vandalism ! i was offered a choice, a charge of 100 euro on my credit card or pay them 50 euro cash. i have not hired a car since or would ever consider it again.
