    USA car hire help!!

Hi hope anyone can be of help!!
Wanted to do a road trip between NY and Miami in car but so far the prices seem ridiculous!!

As there’s gonna be four of us we wanted something big like a 4x4 or a people carrier but problem is were all 23.

With only two of us driving we’ve been getting quotes which seem cheap at first but once you add on everything lese its expensive ( or is it)?

    For example
    Netflights.com = £431 (Chrysler Pacifica)
Additional Drivers - £4.00 per day + local taxes.
    One Way Fee= £250 (1000 miles+)
Drivers under 25 years of age will be subject to a supplemental charge of US$25.00 + tax per day. In New YorkState the supplemental charge is US$43.00 + tax per day

So lets say we stayed in new york for 5 days that would be 43x5=213USD
Add in the rest of the days =200USD

    Grand total of nearly £1000!!!

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Thank you!!

    Re: USA car hire help!!

could be worse , if you were doing it the other way they would stick you for a daily airport tax...for the length of the rental !!!!

personally if I wanted to go by road it would be greyhound ...british as well ! ; buy a ticket , second half price

for a bit more a 7 day go anywhere is possible ..have a look at their website

    OR there are rail passes

OR you could rent a motor home [ no expensive motel rooms !] ... of course then they would be looking to gouge evry cent out of you , oil checking charge , extra mileage charge ......well , you have that message already !

but en route , DO NOT MISS ........well , thats another story .....23 years old ? won't tell you about my favourite bookshop in brunswick Ga

    Re: USA car hire help!!

Me and a mate did a US road trip last year. We used Carhire3000.com and booked before we went, the prices we paid seemed very reasonable compared to other websites I looked at so I'd recommend them.

There are ways you can get round the problems you mentioned, eg. work out where you want to visit and cut the trip up into sections, then have just one driver for each of these sections, that saves you money on additional drivers and you will only need to pay one under-age driver fee per section. You will need to officially switch drivers at each destination though but if you're staying there for a couple of days it should't be too much of a problem. This way you can also decide if you need the car while you're in a city so it will save money if you're not paying for a car you're not using while you're sight seeing.

Spliting the trip into sections will also save you money because we didn't get charged for one way fees within one state so if you plan carefully you can avoid this.

We used greyhound buses for some of the trip which was obviously cheaper but driving your own car is much more fun.

Hope that gives you something to consider.

    Dave.
