Best tariffs only for new customers.

I have just done a comparison for dual fuel on the major sites including this one. They all list N-power in first position for me with their sign online 10 scheme, claiming this will save me £169. I am on N-power's sign online 4 scheme but reading the small print, the new scheme is for new customers only. Is the only option to move to British Gas (next on the list) and then possibly come back at a later date? Any ideas anybody?

Re: Best tariffs only for new customers.

I managed to change tariffs from Sign Online 4 to SOL 10 by telephone a couple of weeks ago; after a great deal of trouble with npower having tried to vastly overcharge me (by 432 kwh) when my electricity meter was changed I too was going to change suppliers and found their cheaper tariff through price comparison sites. They were not going to let me do this until I made a written complaint and threatened to change suppliers. Very helpful staff, but standard replies by post following just about every phone call are very inaccurate and you just have to keep phoning or emailing them. You need to keep a good eye on your meter readings and calculate what you should be spending, as they always overestimate. When I changed tariff, I was astonished to get a letter saying I'd cancelled my direct debits and was going to pay whole bills! Apparently, this is another standard letter. I will have missed one DD payment due to need to reinstate payments - they didn't mention anything about having to cancel and reinstate them.Worried that it might affect my DD discount, have been assured it won't, but discount due April 6 still not on my bill and now been told this won't appear until July! I am going to challenge that with another complaint. My message is - you can get the SOL 10 tariff, but wonder if the hassle with this company is really worth it and am seriously considering changing supplier, not to B. Gas though, but to one with better customer care..

Thanks very much for your very full and useful reply.

With the terrible feedback on BG on a number of these forums maybe I will look at the next best supplier, UTILITA and see what people are saying. There is little to choose in the price.

If you read a lot of the negative feedback you'll find that a lot of the problems were not with the suppliers- the density of some people is incredible! However now's a good time to switch cos there's lots of new tarriffs for price freezing and BG have just informed me that my Click Energy elec rate is being reduced. Bonus!
