Changing from prepay meter to standard

    Hi,

I've been renovating our new house for the past 8 or 9months and are ready to move in, the house has a Powergen prepay meter we have been using but want to change to a standard meter. Do I have to use powergen and is there always a charge. I'm thinking that if its a straight replacement I should not pay if they want my custom??

    Any help appreciated.

Re: Changing from prepay meter to standard

It should work by you just phoning them up, they say they'll come in a couple of weeks in the morning, they fit the new meter and there's no charge as long as there's nothing to pay on the old system. You should use powergen, in my view, until the meter is fitted.

If you don't have a good payment record, they can ask for a deposit.

Sometimes the supplier refuses. Prepayment meters earn them more money and it's easier to collect it. If they refuse and you have a decent payment record, you can ask energywatch for help with your case.

Sorry to inform you but powergen do now charge for prepay to credit meter changes. This would cost £50 and you would need to go on a direct debit. I'm not sure if all companys charge but powergen do. You could use another company but that would mean switching (which takes 4-6weeks) and then there would be at least a weeks wait to have the meter changed.

    kingnaji,

Energy providers are very cautious about changing meters as it usually means they pay for the meter and then lose the customer to a competitor meaning they lose out. However, I'm sure if you said you would stay with E.ON they would consider changing the meter for free as should always be the case anyway.

Use our comparison tool at the top of the page and see which product is the best for you. You should see that E.ON's 'Energy Online Extra Saver 6' tariff is one of the most competitive. If it is then you can call E.ON and ask for them to change your meter and put you on this tariff.
