Help needed please. We are currently with npower for Gas and electricity. Currently we pay for our gas quarterly and are probably a medium user. Elec - we are a prepay meter but have to pay extra for doing this and apparantly for going into emergency credit which we often do as no-one remembers to check the meter!

A lovely BGas lady came to my door and said that they don't charge for using a meter or for going into emergency. She has also said she will send us a payment card for our gas. I now have 21 days to change my mind.

It seemed OK but my husband pointed out that BG are more expensive. Being a dimwit, I didn't ask for a comparasion of prices (and yes, I feel sufficiently stupid about this!).

Soooo my question is, using the above options am I better off than when I was with npower? I've used the comparision thingy but I'm not sure I'm getting a true idea. We prefer not to pay by DD as my hubby is self employed and the money isn't always there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Paying by quarterly statements is one of the most expensive ways to pay - you are best to pay by direct debit as the unit rates are always lower no matter what company you go with.  If you can pay by direct debit, it is best to get your pre payment meter changed to a 'credit meter' and then go for a dual fuel package as this always works out to be the cheapest method - a lot of companies will change the meter for free so just call whoever your electric is with and ask them.  if you do decide to go onto direct debit for both, always call the company you are thinking of going to and get their unit rates and compare.

Helen, I would not go with British Gas. The customer service is awful. If you need to contact them you will hang on for hours to be spoken to by the rudest call centres I have ever come across! I went with them. It took me 15 months to get a bill and days on the phone. I'll be honest with you I moved away and I wouldn't have cared if I was paying more. I didn't, the price of my new supplier works out better. Good luck Kevin

Sorry about the last post finger slipped but what I'm certain about and to echo kev is DO NOT go with British Gas although it appears cheaper the customer service is worse than a nightmare. I switched from them after a year of hell and would never go back.
