    life insurance-change in circumstances

Just wondering- if you take out a joint life insurance and then separate, does this affect your cover? My husband and I took out cover about 8 years ago and have now separated- should we take out new individual policies?

Hi -- Although seperated, are you still legally married. ?

If you are just seperated then it would be advisable to inform them anyway, if you are divorced then I think the policies would need changing, as the intended beneficiary will not necessarily be the other surviving partner in the unfortunate event of a claim arising.

Either way really, you should seek clarification with the life company.

I AM NOT QUALIFIED TO GIVE ADVICE BUT...

Working in the business, I have never been told the a seperation affects anything. The only thing I normally come across is that if & when the policy matures, the company may send a cheque out in joint names. It may be worth checking with the provider. With you both still being married, the ex would still be classed as the next of kin. Also as far as I'm aware, once a policy has started, the life assured names can't be altered however, you may be able to asign it to either proposers/policyholders.
