    Who knows about NICs? Tecky needed...

    Tecky needed....

    I'm running a Desktop PC with a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast NIC (with drivers bang up to date) - when plugged into my 20meg BB the maximum speed is a paultry 7mbps...let's all blame the ISP......but wait.....when I plug the ethernet cable into my laptop (with a Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet NIC), the speed (via the same speed tester site), zooms to 18meg +. I've run the test several times over several hours so am assuming it's my PC NIC BUT...can't find any real evidence to support replacing the Realtek....any thoughts anyone???

    Network Interface Card, an expansion board you insert into a computer so the computer can be connected to a network

    Right, try this.

    1) Go to device manager from control panel

    2) find your NIC and right click it and go to properties

    3) Go to one of the tabs at the top of the new window (Don't know the name, not in front of a PC I can check)

    4) Find a setting that says about duplex. Make sure it's set at 100/Full Duplex.

    5) if you had to change it, restart and you should see a difference.

    So I can't be more specific, I can't check the names of settings or anything because I'm at my work PC :)

    TBS-Saosin;

    Thanks for taking the time to post from work - the card is already configured to 100/Full...don't know if you know as the PC is three years old so are some cards only capable of receiving a restricted performance.. ie 20 meg bb wasn't around three years ago, so some manufacturers installed cheap cards? Long shot but i'm struggling ...
