I would checkout the distributor condition and rotor arm make sure it's all clean and the contacts are all good firstly, along with ignition leads, spark plugs and timing, the problem sound like an electrical one, as it seems to be getting a decent fuel supply or it would be cutting out, although it would still be a good idea to change the fuel filter as well.

Part 2)  Unknown, but any half decent car electrical shop should be competent enough to change your tape for a CD player.

The cd player install is an easy DIY job.  You can easily aquire the wiring harness ( which will convert the ford wiring to ISO, so you can fit any player you llike), facia plate and removal keys    Moderator edit -- link removed in line with MS terms of service, please read the rules on joining.

Just remeber the wattage of the speakers relative to your new player!  You can get new speakers installed or DIY again...again, its an easy fit.  Or keep the volume down. LOL.

Having driven Fiestas for the last 7 years, the engines are generally very robust, so I would think it is having a hard time with the air/ fuel mix when cold.

I think you have a hole in the exhaust or on one of the joins close to the engine.... which is confusing the air/fuel (lambada)sensor mounted on the very top of the exhaust.  They do need a service every 10,000 miles, or every year.  Good DIY job again.  To help yourself, a Haynes manual for it will be the best £15 you ever spent.
